Mr. Dan Fagan, Assistant Principal - Mr. Michael Byron, Principal
Joseph H. Martin School opened in September of 1972 and housed grades six
through eight.
It remained that way until January of 1981 when fifth grade was added after the
Caswell School
fire. In September of 1981, Martin became a kindergarten through grade eight
school until 1997.
Then, Martin School went back to being a "middle" school and now houses grades
five through eight.
The first principal of Martin School was James T. Thomas who
was previously headmaster of
Taunton Vocational High School. While the school was under construction, the
workers discovered
a woodchuck living in what are now the soccer fields. Mr. Thomas would visit the
site and feed the
woodchuck, whom he named Gertrude. For those of you who were curious, that is
how a woodchuck
became the school mascot. Mr. Thomas retired in June of 1981. Since then we have
had Mr. Donald Cleary,
Dr. Stephen Desroches, Mr. Christopher Baratta and now Mr. Michael Byron as principals of the
Joseph H. Martin School.
