Steps to Prepare a Science Fair Project

Mrs. Guglielmo's Page

1. Select aTopic -
Choose an area of science that you find interesting. For example, you notice something, and wonder why it happens. You see something and wonder what causes it. You want to know how or why something works. Remember a Science Fair Project is a test you do to find an answer to a question, not just showing what you know about something.

2. Begin a log book -
This is a daily diary of what you worked on for the science fair.

3. Gather Background Information -
Gather information about your topic from books, magazines, the Internet, people and companies. Keep notes and about where you got your information.

4. Scientific Method -

  • State the Purpose of your experiment-What are you trying to find out? Identify the variable you will be testing
  • State your Hypothesis- Your best guess about what the answer will be. Design Experiments to test your hypothesis
  • Gather materials needed

5. Do your experiment and record your data.

6. Graphs and charts -
Tell what happened in your experiment and put the results in graphs and charts. Do any necessary calculations needed.

7. Draw conclusions

8. Construct a Display
You must have a 3-sided display with the title in the center. The left side of the display is to have the purpose, hypothesis and procedure. The right side of the display must have the data, observations, any charts or graphs that are relevant and your conclusion is to be clearly stated.

9. Write a Lab Report
Use the same lab report set up that we have been using in class.

10.  Write a Research Paper
This paper will vary in length depending upon the topic you have chosen. Make sure that all work is cited properly in your bibliography.

11.  Practice Presentation to Judges
Practice explaining your project to someone. You may want to write some of your important information on index cards to help guide you through your presentation.
