SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
PROGRAM OF STUDIES
Scientific Experimentation
Discovery and experimentation is science! It is the driving force behind the technological fields that define today’s society! Scientific experimentation is also the means through which common misconceptions are disproved (just take a look at the Mythbusters!). Science Experimentation is an integral part of any science course and the THS science department provides an opportunity for science students to demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity in experimentation each year at the annual Science Fair!
Honors Courses
- All students conduct an experimental project that meets with teacher approval and write a research report supporting their experiment. This project serves to strengthen college research skills. It also provides students with an opportunity to choose and creatively explore a scientific field of interest. This aspect of assessment is weighed toward a student’s final grade.
- Honors students participate in the annual Taunton High School Science Fair and are eligible to win associated prize money, scholarships and book awards. Qualifying students may represent Taunton High School in the Region III, State Science Fair, and the International Science Fair with parent permission.
Academic Courses
- All students conduct an experimental project that meets with teacher approval and write a research report about their experiment. This aspect of assessment is weighed toward a student’s final grade.
- All students are encouraged to participate in the annual THS Science Fair and are eligible to win associated prize money, scholarships and book awards. for those who qualify, represent THS in the Region III, State Science Fair, and the International Science Fair with parent permission.
Standard Courses
- Students design and conduct scientific investigations using methods designated by individual course instructors. This aspect of assessment is weighed toward a student’s final grade.
- Students are encouraged to participate in the annual THS Science Fair and for those who qualify, represent THS in the Region III, State Science Fair, and the International Science Fair with parent permission.
Medical Laboratory Program
Taunton High School, Bristol Community College and University of Massachusetts Dartmouth are offering a career path into the field of Medical Laboratory Science. Students who enroll in this program will participate in a program that links high school classes with university experiences. Students will visit medical laboratory facilities, attend summer workshops and enroll in free college courses at BCC. Graduates of this competitive medical laboratory science program at UMD go on to careers in research, medicine and the health care field.
Prerequisites:
• Passed freshman year and are interested in the health care professions
• Registered Tech Prep students at Taunton High School
• Maintain a B average
• Have enrolled in or have completed Biology Academic.
• Have completed Algebra and enrolled in Geometry
MCAS Science Requirement
Beginning with the class of 2010, all students must pass (220 or higher) a science MCAS test as a graduation requirement. Currently, the THS Science Department offers 3 courses that prepare our students for the MCAS science exam that best suits them: Biology, Chemistry and Introduction Physics.
Recommended Science Course Map
It is also very important for students, parents and guidance councilors to note that these course maps are only recommendations. All course levels will prepare students for MCAS exams and students are not mandated to stay in a particular course level or on a specific path. Students may move freely between levels provided they meet the prerequisites and have approval. These maps are intended to provide an overview of your science career here at THS and should be used to help plan your four years of high school and beyond.
