829     Band/Wind Ensemble                                          10 Credits

The band has as its primary objective the development of young musicians to take their place in the musical life of the community.  The band will perform at a variety of athletic events, school assemblies, concerts and community functions.  This course runs throughout the year on alternating days.

Wind Ensemble is designed for instrumental musicians to work in small ensembles and enhance technique and other instrumental skills.  This course is open to freshmen through seniors who play an instrument and are members of the school band.  This ensemble will perform at all events scheduled for the concert band.  Permission of the instructor is required.  This course runs throughout the year on alternating days.

819      Band/Jazz Band                                                   10 Credits

Prerequisite:  Audition and director's recommendation

Students in this band work on a variety of musical selections throughout the year and perform at various school assemblies, concerts, and community functions.

818      Treble Chorus                                                       5 Credits

This chorus is open to all freshman, sophomore, junior and senior girls.  This course is a prerequisite to Concert Choir and Select Chorus.  This group is required to sing at school and community events.

828      Concert Choir                                                        10 Credits

Prerequisite: Recommendation of the Choral Director and participation in Treble Chorus for girls

This group is limited to approximately 100 voices.  This chorus is open to all freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors by recommendation.  All boys will be accepted into this choir.  This group is required to sing at school and community events.

838      Select Chorus                                                        10 Credits

Prerequisite:  Audition and director's recommendation         

Students in this chorus work on a variety of musical selections throughout the year and perform at various school assemblies, concerts, and community functions.  This group is limited to approximately 30 voices.  This is the school's prestige choral group and is required to perform at school and community events.

834      Harmony and Theory                                           5 Credits

This course is open to all sophomores, juniors and seniors who have an interest in music and wish to perform or write music.  This is a recommended course for future music majors.  A limited background in music will help but is not necessary.


915      Drawing and Painting I                                          5 Credits

The course is the prerequisite for further study in visual art at Taunton High School.  In addition to drawing and painting, the student will develop skills used in designing two-dimensional artwork.  There will be an early focus in the elements of design along with the drawing exercises.  The drawing exercises and assignments will be followed by a study of the properties and applications of color and some movements in Modern Art.  Students will develop technical skills in a variety of coloring media including colored pencil, oil pastel, dry pastel, tempera paint, acrylic paint, and watercolor paint.

 

926      Crafts I                                                                  5 Credits

Prerequisite:  Recommendation from Drawing and Painting I

This course is an introduction into many different crafts.  An overview of the history of those crafts will be presented.  Projects may include a variety of types of weaving and work with fibers, basketry, jewelry, bead making, sculpting and construction, stitchery, papermaking and marbleizing.

 

927      Ceramics and Three Dimensional Design I        5 Credits

Prerequisite:  Recommendation from Drawing and Painting I

 

The basic methods of clay construction will be explored.  Slab, pinch, coil, wheel throwing and drape mold methods will be explored.  Emphasis will be on original designs.  The techniques of texturing, glazing, and firing will be experienced.  Also wire, wood, plaster and paper mache will be presented.

 

  938      Photography                                                         5 Credits

Prerequisite:  Senior recommended from Drawing and Painting I and has a final grade of C or higher.

  This course allows the student to explore the basics of black and white photographic film processing.  The students will learn the fundamentals of photographing the art elements along with basic composition and visual interpretation through the use of the camera.  The students will scan 35mm black and white negatives and learn digital photography techniques using Adobe Photoshop on Apple Macintosh computer.

 

925      Drawing and Painting II                                     5 Credits

Prerequisite:  A grade of C or better in Drawing I and recommendation of the Drawing I instructor

 

This is a continuation of Drawing and Painting I at a more advanced level.  Students will continue drawing from observations, figure drawing, and painting and study the basics of design and media. Students will keep a portfolio. Printmaking will be introduced.

 

935      Drawing and Painting III                                    5 Credits

Prerequisite:  A grade of C or better in Drawing II and recommendation of the Drawing II instructor

More emphasis will be placed on drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students will be required to complete projects on an advanced level and explore art history and styles. Individual student styles will begin to emerge and be developed.

 

945      Drawing and Painting IV                                    5 Credits

Prerequisite:  A grade of C or better in Drawing IV and recommendation of the Drawing IV instructor

This is a course for the most proficient art students.  Project work will include work from observation, figure drawing, and painting.  Technical proficiency is expected as the artist’s style is further developed.  Students will learn about art schools and colleges through college representatives, videos and catalogues.

 

937/947  Ceramics and Three Dimensional Design II & III            5 Credits

Prerequisite:  Recommendation from Ceramics I

  An in-depth study into the techniques covered in Ceramics and Three Dimensional Design I.  More emphasis and experience will be placed on the potter's wheel.  Armature sculptures as well as wire, wood and plaster sculptures will be presented on a more advanced level.  Students will perfect their own techniques in the various methods of ceramics and sculpture.

 

975      Basic Video Productions                                       5 Credits

The aim of this course is to make the student aware of the role of television as a mass medium in the field of public communications and to develop the required skills and knowledge necessary to operate the various video and television equipment utilized by the Taunton Public School System.  This course is open to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors.  Students are required to participate in programs beyond the regular school day.
