Dear Taunton Public School Community:
Happy New Year! I hope this communication finds everyone in good health and good spirits. As you know, our District continues to navigate the many challenges associated with the pandemic. We must all continue to take personal responsibility and do our part to ensure our schools continue to remain safe for in-person learning. As has been my approach throughout this school year, I have continued to make decisions as to the educational model for the District based on the information and guidance of the state and local public health officials. To that end, consistent with their advice, I decided to return after the holiday break under a remote learning model for all Cohort A and B students, (with Cohort C students attending in-person) for the first week of school.
I intended to follow this model for this week only, and the local health data had supported this plan as the week unfolded. Unfortunately, over the last 48 hours we have seen an increase in the confirmed number of COVID-19 cases in Taunton that I have discussed further with our local public health officials. Although this increase has not resulted in spread of coronavirus in our schools, and likely is due to interpersonal holiday gatherings and travel in the past two weeks, monitoring this data for another week is the safest approach, and will ensure that when additional students return to in-person learning our schools remain healthy and safe for all students and staff. This proactive approach provides time to continue to assess the current data with our local health officials.
Thus, from Monday, January 11th to Friday, January 15th, we will continue this week’s learning plan, as follows:
Cohorts A & B in all schools will remain in remote learning. This will not impact services to students in Cohort C, who will continue to attend in-person on these days. Cohorts A & B will return to in-person learning as part of our hybrid model after the long weekend on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. Special education students who attend placements outside of the Taunton Public Schools will continue to be transported and participate in-person unless notified by their program/service provider. All students can expect to see their educators and support staff working from their classrooms. As the decision to keep Cohorts A & B in remote learning until Tuesday, January 19, 2021 was made in conjunction with our local health officials so as to maintain a healthy learning and teaching environment throughout all our schools, I respectfully request that any Cohort C student who is not feeling well or showing symptoms associated with COVID-19 be kept home until medically cleared.
The adjusted schedule for the week of Monday, January 11th, thru Friday, January 15th is as follows: Again, on Tuesday, January 19th Cohorts A&B return to in-person learning per our hybrid model.
- Monday, January 11th & Tuesday, January 12th: REMOTE–Cohorts A,B and D; IN-PERSON–Cohort C.
- Wednesday, January 13th: REMOTE–All Students–Cohorts A, B, C & D.
- Thursday, January 14th & Friday, January 15th: REMOTE–Cohorts A, B and D; IN-PERSON–Cohort C.
- Tuesday, January 19th: Cohort A&B RETURN to in-person learning per their respective hybrid schedule.
