Taunton Public Schools is expanding access to after-school sports for middle school students through a new partnership with the Play Ball Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides free, school-based intramural leagues for students across Massachusetts.
Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, the partnership will fund after-school leagues in lacrosse, cross country, and basketball at Taunton’s middle schools. Play Ball will cover the costs of coaches, equipment, uniforms, and transportation, making it possible for every student to participate regardless of background or circumstance.
Superintendent John J. Cabral said the partnership reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to helping students feel connected and supported beyond the classroom. “This partnership with the Play Ball Foundation brings our Strategic Plan to life by helping students feel connected and supported beyond the classroom,” Cabral said. “Team sports teach belonging, teamwork, and perseverance, all the things that make our schools stronger. We’re excited to give more of our middle schoolers the chance to play, grow, and be part of something special.”
The program supports the district’s Strategic Priority of Student Culture, which emphasizes belonging, engagement, and student well-being. By introducing more no-cost opportunities for students to participate in organized sports, the district aims to build stronger school communities and keep students active and involved after the school day ends.
School Committee Chair Dr. Gregory DeMelo said partnerships like this strengthen the district’s commitment to access and equity. “We’re proud to welcome the Play Ball Foundation to Taunton,” DeMelo said. “At a time when many surrounding communities have had to raise athletic fees, this partnership lets us keep middle school sports free and accessible for every student. It’s a great example of how we can open more doors for kids to learn, connect, and belong, whether in the classroom or on the playing field.”
The Play Ball Foundation currently serves more than 8,000 middle school students each year in 11 Gateway Cities across Massachusetts, and Taunton is the newest district to join the program. Executive Director Katie Small said the organization is excited to partner with Taunton Public Schools. “Taunton is a proud, tight-knit community where kids show up for one another,” Small said. “We’re thrilled to partner with the district to bring the joy and power of sports to even more middle schoolers.”
