TPS Closed Through Friday – Blizzard Recovery Update

Dear Taunton Public Schools Community,

After continued assessment of conditions across the City, Taunton Public Schools will remain closed for the remainder of the week.

We are making this decision now to give families time to plan, particularly those who need to secure childcare, and to allow our facilities teams to stay fully focused on preparing our schools for students’ return.

This week’s storm was extraordinary. With approximately 30 inches of snowfall, it ranks among the most significant weather events our area has experienced in decades. While main roads have improved, reopening schools safely requires more than cleared roadways. Sidewalks, bus stops, neighborhood streets, and school access points must also be safe and accessible for students and staff.

Our groundskeepers and custodial teams have been working nonstop — plowing, shoveling, salting, and clearing entrances and walkways. Their long hours and steady progress have been critical, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to our school community.

Cleanup efforts continue across Taunton, and this additional time through the end of the week will allow crews to complete the work necessary to support a safe return to school next week.

We understand there are questions about how these closures may affect the last day of school in June. A revised final day will be shared once we return and confirm the total number of missed days.

In moments like this, Taunton shows its character. We are a city that feels like a town — neighbors helping neighbors, families supporting one another, and community members stepping up to clear sidewalks and check in on those who may need assistance.

Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and partnership as we work toward a safe return.

Sincerely,
John J. Cabral, Superintendent

Taunton Public Schools
